Jess' curiosity required me to point out the irony of the fact that I do not listen to music very often. For me there is a degree of shame around this point, as someone who prides themselves on their sensitivity for the visual arts, I must admit I have always lacked a complete appreciation for the musical arts. Perhaps that is an opportunity for retrospect at another time.
A question from Flo queried if my reflection was about being efficient (i.e. time management) or prioritising (i.e. purpose management)? My conclusion - that this thinking relates to purpose management, whilst time management is 'always' an issue for me I realise that achieving a lightbulb moment is not necessarily related to efficiencies of time or workload management but in fact about letting ideas and concepts sit and sometimes settle, then recognising when these concepts become relevant and therefore useful to us.
I am now pondering the intersection of relevance and learning. I'm wondering where we as facilitators play a role in the sense making process for learners. How we support the learner in aligning the concepts or models that we present in a learning program and assisting them to make sense of how this is relevant in their world. Recognising that sometimes the 'relevance' is not something that happens in the half day program of learning - it may happen days or weeks later.
Is this fundamentally what our role is - or should be? How does our role now contrast to Learning in the workplace of the future? As we move to more opportunities for self-directed learning for individuals where, and when, will the learning facilitator, or perhaps more appropriately the learning professional intervene or be available.
As always my thinking and reflection has generated more questions than answers.Kim Mchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13759781331141217460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3902657224481031294.post-23679844169212864612013-09-17T11:25:14.084+10:002013-09-17T11:25:14.084+10:00Hi Kim,

In my circumstances I have had to engage an audience, this is something I have been thinking on (& on) about during the progress of this course. In my work I am unable to use Vt because it is on the open web and not protected behind the confines of a corporate firewall(which is where I exist in my day job). I have always found it fairly easy to use with minimal issues.Kim Mchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13759781331141217460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3902657224481031294.post-6521519108176039322011-10-27T07:45:59.213+11:002011-10-27T07:45:59.213+11:00Thanks for the thoughts, Kim. It was very interesting and very well done. I watched the whole thing.
I left a text message on your other sample voice thread. I tried it with audio, but the sound level was way too low in the playback, and I couldn't really hear most of it. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.
Too bad you only get 3 free voicethreads before you have to pay. It's like having 3 wishes; you need to think carefully about how you will use them. Normally I'd probably use up 2 or 3 trials just playing with it to learn how, make mistakes and figure it out before I was ready to deploy it for any real purpose. But its good to know its available. The beauty of Voicethread is that you can audio comment or you can type your comment (I will check if you can do both similtaneously), however it does restrict your length when written. I had 18 months of maternity leave which afforded me the time and gave me mental stimulation. I have been back at work for 9 months and it seems so far removed from this online world that I have discovered but I have been challenged to introduce my personal learning to my colleagues in a professional environment. I need to take the step and I think the links will happen and my PLE will start to fill in the blanks on the 'work' side. I'll let you know how it goes. I find it so much easier to learn from someone with whom I am engaged as a human being. I agree with John that it doesn't need to be a deep emotional connection - just as I wouldn't expect to divulge to my f2f students (Yuk - TOO much information! I can imagine the faces!)but having a sense of where someone is and who they are, what makes them laugh etc etc helps to establish that elusive learning space. I particularly like the part about showing your own vulnerability as a way of creating that 'safe' space. These are some of the ideas that led me to post in my blog about Transparent Learning.

Also I just wanted to make the Sarah Stewart connection! I first met Sarah when I was taking a session for an early 'facilitating online' on virtual worlds and Sarah came into Second Life for the first time! She then became the lead educator for the midwifery build of the SLENZ project which I led here in NZ - she was amazing to work with and great fun to be around! I hope you get to meet her in person some time. I also read her blog fairly frequently even though I have no real interest in midwifery! She writes so well!

Thanks for your post and thanks for your comments Johncatkins_in_nzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00365863320328787042noreply@blogger.com
